Lighthouses have played a vital role in the maritime world for thousands of years, and this led me to look at other forms of communication which transcend language and nationality.
A simple but very clever way of signalling to vessels on the high seas, the International Code Flags employ a series of instantly recogniseable colours and shapes, and I have used their basic principle to spell out Light The North around the base of the lighthouse (using a little artistic licence with the colours)!
Since graduating in 1997 from Edinburgh College of Art with a BA Hons in Design & Applied Arts, Calene has worked in various media including ceramics, graphic design and textiles. Driven by a long-held interest in printmaking and a love of colour and surface pattern, Calene taught herself to screenprint in 2015 and now uses this technique in the creation of laser cut and handcrafted wooden dioramas. Inspired by memories from childhood and her time working on stage sets in the theatre, these unique, ever-evolving designs grew out of a desire to create little contained, immersive, imaginary worlds in three dimensions.
